When and Why it Started
Blue Art Studio Company started the Featured Artist Program in early 2023. It originated from a desire to help aspiring artists and practiced artists with small audiences bridge the gap between losing money and making real income. Our approach to helping is providing an infrastructure to monetize these artist’s artwork and designs on their behalf.
How it Works
Undoubtedly, the biggest questions regarding this program are as follows: How does the artist make money? What does Blue Art Studio Company get out of this? How does the artist avoid getting the short end of the deal? They are all valid questions and we would be remiss to avoid answering them transparently. Here’s how it works:
How does the artist make money?
Through our application process or our internal selection process, we reach out to an artist in our queue and discuss our agreement/contract process. The important component to remember is that this process will NEVER require ownership of the artist’s work. We work with the artist to select 2-6 of their artworks with which we will have exclusive printing rights throughout the feature (not permanently). During this time frame, Blue Art Studio Company will host these prints on our website and make them available in our webstore. We price according to our structure (in agreement with the artist) and handle all of the printing, packaging, and shipping. 100% of the profits from these prints will go to the artist during the time of the feature.
The second component to the agreement involves apparel designs. We collaborate with the artist to create a small collection of apparel that will be a permanent staple in our webstore. These products and designs will be permanently owned by Blue Art Studio Company but will include a royalty agreement for the artist to collect income from these apparel items.
What does Blue Art Studio Company get out of this?
To avoid appearing disingenuous, we will answer the monetary side of this question first. Blue Art Studio Company achieves three benefits from this program; apparel profits, marketing, and website traffic. On the other hand, we truly get a sense of accomplishment by assisting artists with their growth in the industry. We choose to answer the business side of this question first to be open and transparent. Too often in the art industry artists are taken for granted and discarded once their talents have been exploited. We aim to avoid this reputation with our company.
Once the feature is complete, we provide an offer to the artist to purchase their art in full. If declined, the feature is over and all is well - and yes, declining is a genuine option! Relationships will not be lost or tarnished if the offer is not accepted. However, if they accept, we negotiate a contract on the purchase and Blue Art Studio Company will own the art/design outright and prints will remain available in the webstore. A royalty program is a part of the contract and the artists will always be credited for the creation of the piece!
How does the artist avoid getting the short end of the deal?
As stated before, we do NOT ask the artist for ownership during the artist’s feature and our offer for ownership after the feature can always be declined. Artists receive all profits from their featured prints, a royalty program for collaborated apparel designs, and a potential opportunity to sell their art for a lump sum at the end of the feature. We offer this program to increase the awareness of our artists, assist them with bridging the artist income gap, and provide a platform for product creation and growth. We want to fill a gap in this industry by providing infrastructure most artists will never have access to. If artists are not winning, we are not doing our job.
